Each category gets a savings range by how it is bought today: 8 to 15% with no contract and no tender for three years or more; 5 to 10% with one supplier on informally agreed prices; 3 to 6% with a contract not recently tendered; up to 3% if tendered in the last two years.
The range is then adjusted for the type of spend: energy counts at half, because prices follow the market; agency staff at 80%; services, IT, facilities and marketing at 110%; maintenance and operating supplies at 120%, where spend is often fragmented.
These are Waterfront working ranges from our own experience, not published benchmarks; there is no reliable public benchmark by category for mid-sized businesses. Your real savings depend on your suppliers, volumes, specifications and the market.
